Tired, worn-out, can’t regain your normal energy, can’t get out of bed no mater what you do? Adrenal fatigue, (technically called ‘hypoadrenia” or hypoadrenalism”) is very prevalent and one of the most undiagnosed conditions for the last fifty years. Despite its discovery in the 1800’s and the first effective treatments in the 1930’s most conventional doctors are unaware of the problem and unaware of the effective treatments.
The purpose of the adrenal glands is to help your body cope with stress. It is their job to enable your body to deal with stress from every possible source, ranging from injury and diseases to over-exercising to work and relationship problems. Your energy, endurance, happiness and your very life depend on their proper functioning. Although it’s estimated that up to 80% of adult Americans suffer from some level of adrenal fatigue in their lifetime, it is very under diagnosed. Here in Colorado, with its fast paced and high energy lifestyle, it is quite common but unfortunately still under diagnosed.
Normally your adrenal glands secrete minute but powerful and balanced amounts of hormones. Because they are designed to be so responsive to changes in your emotional, physical and psychological environment, and number of factors can interfere with this finely tuned balance. After continuous or extensive levels of stress, the adrenals lose their ability to respond to these stresses. In essence, they “burn out.” As the start to burn out symptoms, often confused with other illnesses start to manifest such as frequent colds, and flu-like symptoms. However, with continuous untreated conditions, more serious conditions start to arise including habitual colds, respiratory infections, allergies, sexual disorders, chronic fatigue syndrome, allergies, fibromyalgia, adult onset diabetes, auto-immune disease and alcoholism.
The good news is that you can be tested for adrenal fatigue using simple blood and saliva tests diagnosed by a physician that is experienced with treating adrenal fatigue. Treatments take between six and twelve months and typically require changes in diet, lifestyle, and sleep patterns in conjunction with hormone therapy, supplementation, and adrenal rebuilding diets.
