Brain Functions

Your brain controls 90 % of your hormones, your metabolism and cravings. Having a balanced brain reduces these cravings, controls sleep and helps you maintain your metabolism, immune system and cardiovascular system. Therefore, keeping your brain healthy is an absolute must for proper weight control.

Hormones and Stress Reduction

When you are stressed, you deplete minerals and nutrients including B vitamins, vitamin C and E, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus and potassium.  Stress also has a major impact on your hormones. DHEA, the mother of all hormones, is vital for weight loss. It also decreases cholesterol, supports your immune system and decreases formation of fatty deposits. Cortisol, your stress hormone increases with age and stress levels. Elevated cortisol increased food intake. When cortisol is elevated, you may feel fatigued, angry, depressed or have mood swings. Elevated cortisol levels promote insomnia and sugar cravings that promote weight gain. As women age, they often lose estrogen that promotes cortisol levels. On the average, menopausal women gain 20 pounds. Depletion of testosterone in males has a similar effect as estrogens in women; it increases long term stress that promotes cortisol levels inducing the weight gain cycle. Furthermore, as men gain fat, the fat converts their testosterone to estrogen. This causes a downward spiral of muscle mass loss and weight gain.

Metabolism

Age or poor diets have a tremendous impact on our metabolism. Poor diets prevent our cells from converting our food sources to glucose and then to ATP, the ingredient that produces 90% of our energy in cells. Your brain and hormones play major roles in your metabolism as well. If these are not functioning at optimum levels, you will not have the energy to exercise and your metabolism will slow to a point that your body will convert your food to fat.  Therefore, your diet must not just restrict calories, but it must be tuned to your biochemistry that promotes optimum brain and body metabolism in order for you to control your weight and promote good health.

Exercise

Make no mistake, exercise starts with your brain. If your brain sends signals to sit on the couch instead of exercise, that is what you will do. A healthy brain will promote exercise. Once your brain says go, you need to have an exercise program that promotes the best health for you. This may be a cardio workout, aerobic, anaerobic or a combination. Therefore, in a similar to your diet, your exercise program needs to be tailored to your biochemical needs and optimum health for your desired lifestyle.

Sleep

Adequate sleep is required to maintain health and for weight loss.  Lack of sleep elevates inflammatory markers leading to disease and increases cortisol, your stress hormone. If you continuously get less than 6 ½ hours of sleep, studies have shown that you will lose insulin sensitivity which leads to weight gain and may predispose yourself to diabetes. Sleep disorders can be usually be corrected with a combination of supplementation, lifestyle changes and hormones.

Weight Loss Programs

With all these factors influencing weight, a complete multi-system program needs to be tailored for each patient. At LexiLife, a weight loss program will include a complete physical exam, a medical history review, a brain test, and a variety of biochemical marker lab tests.  When the results are received, a diet, hormone, supplementation, lifestyle and exercise program will be developed and monitored for you. As the weight loss program progresses, you are in regular communication with physicians and practitioners. Where necessary, program alterations will be made to optimize your overall health.
